Reported by: Mechell Dixon Thursday, Apr 16, 2009 @06:00pm CDT A ninth confirmed case of a rabid skunk is prompting the health department to issue a warning to pet owners and residents.This is the ninth case of rabies confirmed since March 7th. Locations where rabid skunks were found are all across Wichita County, from Southmoor in the city to Old Electra Road near Iowa Park. Last year there were only two rabies cases all year. Authorities are urging residents to make sure their pets are vaccinated and to be alert while outdoors. You are also asked not to shoot any skunks because they can not be tested for rabies if they are shot in the head. If you have contact or get scratched by a skunk, wash the wound immediately and call a doctor. Also. do not leave pet food outside for long periods, and if you see a skunk in daylight hours, call Animal Control at (940) 761-7824. |
