Victims and firefighters from Montague County's fatal wildfires 2- weeks ago are losing hope the Federal Government will come through with disaster aid.
But, their 20- thousand neighbors across the county are pulling together to help in a big way, while calling out for help from all of Texoma.
Terri Covington/Stoneburg Resident: "The barn is right straight ahead here. The house sat right here, and we pushed it in a big pit over here. There's two of them actually."
This is what's left of Terri and Tom Covington's Stoneburg home after that dreadful day that claimed two of their neighbors lives, and another up the road near Montague.
Terri: "You know those dust devils that are out in the fields, they were as tall as telephone poles with fire, and it made this noise like I'd never heard before. And, the wind was blowing 70- miles per hour.
Alan Campbell/Sunset Volunteer Fire Department: "In Sunset, we lost 8- homes, with people living in them. They lost everything they had. And, some of them had teenage kids, and I mean they lost everything."
Doug Page/Bowie Fire Chief: "There was no mutual aid available. The state resources were unavailable. They were committed to other places throughout the state and the region. We didn't have any air support available because of the winds. So, it was a real challenge at best."
A challenge that took a toll on life, property, and equipment.
Randel Heugatter/Bowie Rural Fire Department: "Our mainline tanker sustained 22- 25- thousand dollars worth of damage."
Walt Greenwade/Bowie Fire Department: "I know Bowie Rural lost one truck because of a motor blowing up. I know the city of Bellevue lost a truck."
These are the reasons three women have organized a fundraiser, set for May 1st in Bowie.
There will be a brisket dinner, music by Dave Alexander, and plenty of other entertainment.
Larry Cox/Bowie Mayor: "Well, we have a raffle, we have a silent auction, we have an auction, and we have some great package deals in the auction. Trips and different things like that. So, we're hoping all of those things are going to be drawing cards."
Elizabeth Dunn & Carrie Aune/Organizers along with Wanda Fandel: "They lost trucks, lost a lot of stuff. And, they saved a lot of homes doing all of that. So, we thought it was just time to give back. Yes, and to say thank you to all of the firefighters, because if it wasn't for them, it would have been worse, much, much worse."
If you'd like to show up and help the people of Montague County and their fire departments, along with the Bellevue Volunteer Fire Department, the fundraiser is set for May 1st, at 5pm, at the VFW Hall in Bowie.
For more information, just call Elizabeth Dunn at 872-1244 or Carrie Aune at 872-3468.
