  • RV's Still Rolling Down The Road Despite Gas Prices
    Reported by: Sara DiMura

RV2008-05-26-1211845188.jpgOne local retailer says rising gas prices are actually not hurting RV sales so far.

The Robinson's have had to cut corners by not spending a lot of money on entertainment plus making sure they stick to their planned route. But they weren't about to forego their plans to travel because they didn't get to spend memorial day together last year.

Meet the Robinson's. A family of seven from Abilene. Roger is retired from the Air Force and the family is moving to Missouri. They stopped in Wichita Falls for a few days because they were having a problem with the hitch on their RV. When that's fixed they don't plan on going off the beaten path again.

"You definitely think about where you want to go and the shortest way to get there because at four dollars a gallon nearly,” says Mary Kay Robinson.

It's a price Mary Kay Robinson is willing to deal with this year.

"Last Memorial Day he was in Baghdad so we're very happy to be here together and by comparison high gas prices are a pretty small price to pay,” says Mary Kay Robinson.

The Robinson's have had their RV for about a year now and they already feel like it's been a good investment because they've saved money on hotels.

Bob Hartgrove works at Wichita Falls RV center and he says sales have been steady the past few months. He says people won't stop traveling instead they may reconsider their destinations.

"We think people may take shorter trips on their vacations which we think that will probably be a plus for us,” says Bob Hartgrove Wichita Falls R.V. Center.

The RV is something the Robinson’s plan on keeping down the road.

"The RV’s paid off we're keeping the RV we're keeping the kids we thought that was probably also a good decision, but food has to come in somewhere and it gas costs so much you have to make up for it other places,” says Mary Kay Robinson.

Bob Hartgrove at Wichita Falls RV center says some folks have traded in their diesel motor homes for more fuel efficient models. And he says he sees midsize tow-able RV’s and mid-size fifth wheels becoming more popular if gas prices continue to rise.
