Athletic Advantage Expert Blog - November 2012: Should Injuries

By: United Regional
Updated: November 5, 2012
When it comes to shoulder injuries, virtually all athletes are susceptible.  In fact, close to 30 percent of the athletic injuries seen in a year's time at United Regional are shoulder related.

Shoulder injuries are frequently caused by athletic activities that involve excessive, repetitive, overhead motion.  However, these injuries can also occur during your everyday activities.

Some of the common symptoms of a shoulder injury include: shoulder stiffness, lack of strength in your shoulder, or the feeling as if your shoulder could pop out of socket.  Shoulder pain comes from swelling, inflammation, tearing, or bone spurs around the four tendons that make up the rotator cuff. Common causes of this type of pain are: Tendonitis, Arthritis, Bursitis, Fractures, and Dislocations.

Whether your treatment involves physical therapy alone, or as a compliment to surgery, the goal at United Regional is to keep you, the player, in the game!

To learn more about shoulder injuries, or about the surgical solutions to these conditions, visit http://www.unitedregional.org/elbow-and-shoulder, or call United Regional's Sports Medicine Program at 940-781-8812.

And don't forget to check out Cameron Stiles' story - how he was able to recover from his shoulder injury with the help of Dr. Schacter and the team at United Regional.
