Students at John G. Tower Elementary opened their school and their hearts this afternoon to honor veterans.

Students paid tribute to present and past military personnel through songs and video presentations.

Dozens of parents and grandparents, many who are active duty or retired military members, were on hand for the one-hour ceremony.

Special guests say the tribute from the students was moving.

"I think it's very special for all the vets to get appreciated for what we did and the kids do an excellent job and the teachers just... it's unbelievable what the teachers do. I think the kids are much better behaved than when I was," says Dennis Longhenry who is retired from the U. S. Air Force.

About 75% of John Tower Elementary students are in military families.

This veteran's day program is the largest annual event held at the school.
