The Kitchen Needs Drivers and Turkey Donations

The Kitchen recently added an additional 150 clients to its Meals on Wheels program, which is increasing its number of clients in the program to 900.
But in addition to drivers The Kitchen also need turkey donations, now that Thanksgiving is quickly approaching.
Five days a week volunteers gather food at The Kitchen to deliver to clients in the organization's Meals on Wheels program.
"Right now, we're operating at just about 750 to 775.. but we still have new increases coming everyday of more seniors that are part of our Meals on Wheels program," says Dominique Calhoun, director of development and marketing at The Kitchen.
Kitchen officials say that program is adding 150 new clients.
However, the number of volunteer drivers is not shifting into high gear.
That's why one volunteer is encouraging the public to participate.
"I have met so many people in my life that I would have never met and I still, when they move on and go into nursing homes and places, I still go visit them cause they add to my life," says Debbie Yoast who is a volunteer driver.
But The Kitchen needs more than volunteer drivers.
With Thanksgiving approaching, turkey donations are a top priority and the deadline is coming fast; Friday, November 9th.
"What happens is that we have to get all those turkeys thawed and from my understanding... for every 3 or 4 pounds it takes about one day to make sure that they're thawed in time to be prepared for the 15th," says Calhoun.
The day The Kitchen plans to dish up donated turkeys during its big Thanksgiving day meal.
If you'd like to donate a turkey simply drop it off at The Kitchen, which is located at 1000 Burnett Street by 5 p.m. Friday.
