While many consider their vehicle a necessity they view it as a nightmare when it's stolen.

That's why Wichita Falls Police held a program today to help residents drive down their chances of being targeted by car thieves.

Residents rolled into Nissan of Wichita Falls this morning to have their vehicle identification numbers etched onto their vehicle windows.

The police department's "community service unit" provided this preventative safety measure free of charge.

"It's definitely a deterrent for criminal activity, it makes their vehicle less desirable as far as being stolen or even burglarized and then being stolen," said Jeff Hughes from the Wichita Falls Police Department.

Police say about 40 cars had their vehicles etched during today's event.

And according to officials several drivers were so eager to take advantage of the free service they arrived to the event two hours before it started.
