Alarm systems may ease the nerves of home and business owners. But for the Wichita Falls Police, they often rattled them. Wichita Falls Police responded to more than three thousand false alarms so far this year.

Officials say officers worked more than five hundred and thirty man hours responding to them. "It puts a strain on the department to dedicate that many man hours to something that can often be prevented," says Sargent John Spragins. Area police are working with homeowners and businesses to keep the false alarms to a minimum.

Officials say you will be fined by the City of Wichita Falls if you have multiple false alarms at your home or place of business. You'll be fined $50 for more than 3 but fewer than 6 false alarms per year. It's a 75 dollar fine for more than 5 and fewer than 8 in a year. And you'll pay a 100 dollar fine for 8 or more false alarms in a 12 month period.
