The trial of the Wichita Falls man convicted of threatening a police officer with a gun will continue next week.
Thursday a jury found Jamell Brooks guilty of aggravated assault of a peace officer. The punishment phase of Brooks' trial took place this afternoon in the 30th District Court.
Jurors will deliberate his punishment starting at 9 a.m. Monday. During arguments Friday, lead prosecutor James Suter told jurors Brooks' charge is enhanced because he's a convicted felon. He told jurors Brooks was found guilty of manufacture or delivery of an imitation controlled substance, out of Missouri.
Defense attorneys called Brooks' psychologist to the stand. He told jurors Brooks' family had a considerable history of drug and alcohol use and dependence. He also stated Brooks has a hard time making good decisions when he's tired.
During cross examination, Prosecutor John Gillespie pointed out that everyone has a hard time making decision when they're low on sleep. He said there's something about Brooks that when he gets tired, he becomes a danger to the community. Gillespie said when most people get tired they don't fire guns at a car their cousin is in, and they don't point guns at police officers.
The jury found Brooks guilty of committing those actions.
