Some MSU club members helped Texomans get rid of their unwanted gadgets.

From personal CD players, to keyboards, to cell phones.

Those were just some of the items folks dropped off to members of MSU's Geosciences Club this afternoon.

The club partnered with Sims recycling solutions, collecting electronic waste.

While these items were helpful at one time they're now outdated.

And club members say they can be dangerous if improperly dumped.

"The electronics components of computers and televisions and radios, they actually have some toxic parts in them. They have things like cadmium and zinc, that are part of the circuit boards and if you dispose of them in a land fill they can leak out and get into the ground water and they can be toxic so they can actually damage people and wildlife," said Rebecca Dodge, MSU Assoc. Professor of Geosciences.

Studies show more than half of outdated electronic waste goes un-recycled.

That's why Geosciences members hosted this second annual event.

Last year they collected 6 thousand pounds of unwanted gadgets.

This year members say they surpassed that amount just 2 hours into this collection.
