Texas' commissioner of education makes a decision that will affect STAAR end-of-course exams for all public school districts in the state.

Michael Williams announced he will defer the implementation of the 15% STAAR grading requirement for this school year. The rule requires that a students' STAAR score make up 15% of their final grade in respective courses.

This comes after more than 11-hundred of the state's about 12-hundred school districts notified the TEA they'd be waiving the rule last year.

Wichita Falls ISD was one of those districts. District officials say they appreciate the commissioner's deferral, especially so students won't be held accountable for testing bad on one certain day.

Executive Director of School Administration Debby Patterson said, "There are so many times that the student has put in the long work for the whole semester.  Anything can happen on any one given day that can affect how the student tests."

Dr. Tim Powers, WFISD Assistant Superintendent said, "There were still a lot of unanswered questions about how the 15% rule was going to be implemented, so we're glad they're allowing us to defer it for another year while the legislators meet and try to determine what they're going to do with it."

Students will still have to pass the test in order to graduate.
