breaking news
If you see a large bird of prey on the road who appears hurt, take care you don't end up in worse shape than the bird. One woman found that out the hard way this afternoon.
An injured redtail hawk was hopping along Kell East between Lawrence and Kemp and the woman was evidently worried it might get run over before animal control officers could arrive. So she stopped and threw her coat over the bird and picked it up.
Unfortunately, the hawk then attached itself to her arm with its claws and refused to let go, causing a great deal of pain.
Animal control officers then arrived and were able to get the hawk to release its grip. The hawk was taken to the wild bird rescue for evaluation and treatment of a head injury and the woman was taken by ambulance to the emergency room for evaluation and treatment of her injuries, which are not believed serious.
