The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, has been ordered to pay over 9-million dollars to the producers of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus for falsely accusing the circus of elephant abuse.

Tampa, Florida based Feld Entertainment accused the ASPCA of bringing false lawsuits against them related to alleged abuse of their elephants. Feld Entertainment's suit claims the ASPCA even hired a plaintiff and paid him more than $190-thousand to bring accusations against the circus.

A US District Court ruled for Feld Entertainment in 2009 against the ASPCA and several other charities, ruling that the paid plaintiff's accusations were not credible.
