U.S. Department of Agriculture Declares Two-thirds of Texas Counties a Primary Natural Disaster Due to Drought

Most parts of Texoma got decent rainfall the past couple of days. Some got a lot more than others, but no one got enough to break the drought that's had its grip on most of the area and the state for months.

In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared two-thirds of the 254 counties in Texas a primary natural disaster from drought and heat, which makes farmers and ranchers in those 157 counties eligible for low interest emergency loans.

All counties in the Texas-Oklahoma viewing area are included in the designation. Counting the Texas and Oklahoma counties, 600 counties in 14 states are now declared primary natural disaster areas due to the drought and heat last year.

Climate data released this week shows 2011 and 2012 were the warmest two-year period in Texas in more than 100 years.
