We begin tonight in Vernon where a huge apartment fire has left at least a dozen people homeless on this chilly Sunday night.

Vernon fire officials say the blaze sparked around 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Augustan Apartments in Vernon.

According to Fire Chief Kent Snead, it started as a cooking fire and flames got into the attic then quickly spread.

According to fire officials, one building at the apartment complex has burned and two others had been evacuated, but residents are now allowed back inside.

We're also told that thankfully, no one has been injured in this fire.

Chief Snead says the city is working with the American Red Cross to help fire victims.

Those who are displaced by the fire, a total of at least 14 people, are being asked to go to Calvary Baptist Church at 2101 Yucca Lane in Vernon for temporary housing assistance.

We do have a crew in Vernon and we will bring more information as it become available.
