He's worked tirelessly helping area veterans get the services they're entitled to and today, Joel Jimenez was honored for his work.

The Spirit of American medal now hangs proudly around the neck of Jimenez.

He was surprised with the honor during today's Dental Stand Down at MSU.

Jimenez says, as commander of "Disabled American Veterans Chapter 41, helping veterans is more than just his duty-- it is his passion.

"I left a lot of bad memories in the jungles of Vietnam and my motto was that I'll never leave a veteran behind cause they need the help. They don't know how to ask for the help but I'm surrounding myself with people who know how to help these veterans," says Jimenez.

The Good Soldier Foundation of Waco presented Jimenez with the award.

He's been commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 41 since it formed in 2000.
