The Iowa park hawks baseball season got off to a fast start this past weekend. The hawks getting four straight wins in their first tournament of the year, allowing no more than four runs in any of their first four games.
Coach Michael Swenson knows what it takes to win, here's what he told his team before their game against Levelland, "...Hey the great thing about yesterday boys is we didn't make an error. If we do that. If we throw strikes like we've been doing. We're going to give ourselves a chance to win."
The Iowa Park hawks rolled through their first tournament of the year allowing only five walks, and only committing two errors in four games. Coach Swenson says the key is fundamental pitching "We don't have the overpowering arms. We don't have anybody that's going to strike out thirteen or fourteen people a game. They throw a lot of strikes, and they're around the plate.  Any pitching staff is only going to be as good as the defense behind them. Fortunately for us we didn't make an error in the first three games, and we only had two in the last game. You know as well as i do that a good defense is a pitching staff's best friend."
Jace Langen, one of Iowa Park's six seniors, was one of the pitchers to benefit from that defense, pitching a full game for the Hawks and only giving up two runs, to go along with three strikeouts, according to Langen, "We were able to throw a lot of strikes, we threw a lot of strikes this weekend. We're not a team that's gonna hit for a lot of power and hit many home runs. But one thing we gotta have is timely hitting and we gotta do the small things with bunt and runs and hit and runs, and we did that really well this weekend..."
Jared biddy also hit the mound this weekend only giving up two hits in five innings, and picking up six strikeouts in a win.  Biddy says going 4-0 gives the Hawks confidence heading in to next week, where they will face equally tough competition, "It helps us a lot it helps our confidence. It helps us going into this weekend knowing that we can beat any team out there."
One of the Hawks goals for the season is to win their district, And at 4-and-0 they know they're moving in the right direction, but that there's plenty of work ahead. Westyn Swenson, a sophmore outfielder for the hawks will be a key piece to the puzzle, "we always have to think that the next team is better than us and that we need to be better than them. And we gotta work our butts off to be known as one of the best teams in the district."
