Carrollton Teen Dies after Collapsing during Walk Home Friday

By: NBC DFW
Updated: March 18, 2013

Extra counselors are on hand Monday at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton for students struggling with grief over the sudden death of a popular varsity athlete.

Gerson Lagunez, 16, collapsed suddenly Friday afternoon while walking home after playing ultimate frisbee with friends.

Lagunez later died, though the cause of his death remains under investigation.

""It's very tragic. Because Gerson was the type of kid that every principal just loves. I would love to have 2,000 more just like him. An honor student, a gifted athlete, involved in marching band, he was a trombone player. He was just a gifted individual all the way around, and it's a great loss for this campus," said Principal Joe Pouncy.

Counselors already visited with the school's band and members of the cross country team because Lagunez was heavily involved in those clubs.

Autopsy results and a cause of death are still pending.
