The Midwestern State Mustangs shot a better second round than their first but dropped to third after the first day of their own MSU Invitational at The Champions Course at Weeks Park on Monday.

MSU was tied with Cameron at 304 after the first round and turned in a 298 for the second for a 602, but that put them behind Incarnate Word at 596 and Cameron's 598 in the team standings.

The Mustangs were paced by the outstanding play of freshman Santiago Gomez who fired a 2-under-par 70 on the par 72, 7,034 yard Champions layout in the second round.  It went with his 3-over 75 in the first for a fourth place tie at 1-over 145 heading into the final round.

Freshman Ian Gallagher opened with an 80 in the first round, but answered with an even-par 72 in the second to tie for 16th at 8-over 152.  Antonio Herran is in the top 20 with a 9-over 153 after rounds of  74 and 79.

Sophomore Derek Oland struggled during the day, posting identical 5-over rounds of 77 to sit at 10-over 154.  Jeremy LeGuen added a 78-81 - 159 as the final team player for MSU.

"Santiago had a great second round," said MSU coach Jeff Ray.  "And Gallagher kept us in the hunt.  We can get it back tomorrow."

MSU also has four individuals playing as medalists.

Spencer Riley is in the top 20 with a 79-74 - 153, while Colton Kowlick has an 85-73 - 158, Cody Rozales an 81-81 - 152 and Raine Copeland an 85-79 - 164.
