Juvenile Escapee In Nolan County Jail

Updated: October 31, 2012

A teenager who escaped last month from the North Texas State Hospital in Vernon remains in the Nolan County jail tonight.

Seventeen year-old Johnathan Ray Torrez is charged with evading arrest, as well as the September 23rd escape from the state hospital in Wilbarger County.

Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda says his department got word that Torrez may make his way there since his mother lives in Sweetwater.

And when officers went to the house of Elizabeth Torrez around 11 p.m. on October 22nd, Chief Frieda says the 17 year old was there.

"When they tried to take Mr. Torrez into custody he tried to run and which he was apprehended by two of our officers," says Chief Frieda.

Torrez remains in the Nolan County jail on a $23,000 bond.

Chief Frieda says the teen will first face the "evading arrest" charge there before returning to Vernon to face the "escape" charge.
