City staff can begin applications for two TxDot grants after city councilors give their approval this morning during the city council meeting.

Parks and Rec. officials hope to receive a grant which will fund a portion of the circle trail project at the Wichita bluff open space area off Seymour highway.

City officials are requesting about 800 thousand dollars from TxDot and they've asked the city to fund the final 20 percent not exceeding more than 24 thousand dollars.

It will build about one mile of trail, but still 5 more miles will be needed to complete the entire project.

"There are three gaps that we have now and the grant application will address one of those gaps to fill because it is the highest priority of the trail we want to finish," said Jack Murphy from Wichita Falls Parks & Recreation.

Councilors also approved city staff to apply for a grant to rehabilitate the Ohio street bridge.

The 126 year old city structure was built in Cleveland, Ohio.

It closed to traffic in 1972 because of unsafe structural conditions.

If the city receives the grant, 80 percent or $96 thousand will be funded by by TxDot.

The other 20 percent, or $24 thousand would be funded by the city.
