Two men from Tipton, Oklahoma are recovering in hospitals after a car crash troopers say was caused by a cell phone.

The crash happened around one Wednesday afternoon about a half mile south of Altus on U.S. Highway 283 in Jackson County. Troopers say 23-year-old Steven Shands and 22-year-old Chris Rhodes were in a 2004 Ponitac and that Shands was driving.

According to troopers, Shands reached down to retrieve his cell phone. The car left the roadway, rolled two complete times, and landed upright. Troopers say Shands was pinned in the wreckage for about 30 minutes until fire crews freed him. His passenger was ejected.

At last report Shands was in serious condition at OU Medical Center. And Rhodes was at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus suffering from arm and internal injuries.
