In an effort to reduce the number of DWI's this New Year's Eve, Wichita Falls Police say they will be out in full force patrolling the streets.

According to drinkinganddriving.org,  Nearly 12 thousand people in the US die each year because of a DWI related accident.

So before you hit the town for your new year's celebration Wichita falls Police Sergeant John Spragins suggests you remember the consequences of not designating a sober driver.

"It's just one of those situations where you are putting yourself and others at risk, not only of somebody getting hurt but the criminal side of it," he said.

A first time drunk driving offense in the state of Texas can get you a fine of up to two thousand dollars and temporarily put you behind bars with a suspended license.

And if you didn't learn your lesson the first time and are convicted of a third DWI, it's considered a third degree felony.

Spragins also said, "Don't get out there and drink and drive because you are not only putting your own safety at risk but probably innocent people out there as well," he said.

If you don't already have a designated driver, Skylark taxi service will provide free rides within the Wichita Falls city limits from midnight to 2 a.m. On new year's.
The number to call is 322-taxi --- or 322- 8294.
