ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast -  At least 61 people were killed during a stampede when New Year's revels turned into a panicked stampede in Abidjan, Ivory Coast's commercial center, authorities said.

State radio and a fire department rescue worker, who refused to give his name, said that many more people were injured in the incident at about 2 a.m. after a fireworks display in the Plateau district of Abidjan.

A Reuters correspondent said there were blood stains and abandoned shoes outside a local stadium early Tuesday.

"My two children came here yesterday," Assetou Toure told Reuters. "I told them not to come but they didn't listen. They came when I was sleeping. What will I do?"

Toure, a cleaner, said she did not know if her children survived.
