Texas Tech Student Charged With Murdering His Neighbor

By: Karel Davis
Updated: January 7, 2013

A 22-year-old Texas Tech student remains jailed tonight on 3 million dollar bond.

He is charged with murdering his neighbor, 51-year-old Michele Bradshaw Terry. Her body was found inside her burning apartment Friday night.

Investigators say this isn't Austin Hasten's first run-in with the law. They say that before he came to Texas Tech, Hasten was a student at Texas A&M where he was charged with a DWI and assaulting a police officer.

Police say Hasten had driven his pickup truck into an apartment building while allegedly under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Authorities in Lubbock say Hasten and Terry were neighbors and apparently Facebook friends, but so far, they have not revealed a possible motive for the killing.
