This is the time many people's new year commitments to better fitness start to weaken, but Vernon College students and faculty now have one new reason to stick with their health goals.

Starting tomorrow Vernon College will opening its new fitness center at their Century City Campus and that's giving students and faculty, and also members of the community reason to get excited about exercise.

The treadmills are lined up.

And the weights are waiting to be lifted.

The one thing that's missing though, is the people.

But, come Tuesday Vernon College's Century City Fitness Center will open its doors and officials say it's a great addition.

"We acquired from golds, we just wanted to give the amenities that our other students have on the Vernon campus but also increase our appeal to our students," Michelle Wood, from Vernon College said.

Wood says the facility will allow for "open gym" where students and staff can use the cardio and weight rooms freely.

But they will also offer classes which they say will benefit their students.

Exercise, Kinesiology classes things like that and then a place for the staff and faculty to achieve their fitness goals," said Jeffrey Rumminger, the Coordinator of Community and Recreational Services at Vernon.

They plan to have spinning classes as well as aerobic and yoga.

And while not all their specifics have been ironed out yet they plan to start their classes within the next month through their continuing education programs.

"Starting in February hopefully, wanting to get as much utilization as we can from everybody, students, staff and the community," Rumminger said.

Though college officials say their focus is on their students and staff they plan to offer courses to the public too.

"We are not a commercial gym. So, what people are used to with other gyms in town we are not going to compete with them necessarily, but we do want to highlight that we will be available for fitness classes for our community," said Wood.

A community that now has one more facility meet those new years goals.

Currently Vernon hopes to offer mommy and me swimming as well as senior water aerobic classes for the public.
