5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease. It is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S.

Here are some things you can do to boost your brain power, and maybe even prevent this devastating disease.

First up, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Next, feed your brain. Carrots, celery and green peppers are rich in luteolin, which may protect from dementia. Apple juice may also boost the production of acetylcholine in the brain, which is the same way well-known drugs work to treat Alzheimer's. Tea and coffee may also boost brain power. One Finnish study found those who drank the most coffee, three to five cups a day, during middle age were 65% less likely to develop Alzheimer's 20 years later.

Another study found moderate drinkers are 23-percent less likely to develop dementia. However, drinking heavily may increase the risk.
