A new study finds women with early stage breast cancer who undergo a lumpectomy are more likely to survive than those who opt for a mastectomy.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center studied more than one hundred thousand women diagnosed with stage one or stage two breast cancer. They were followed for nine years.

They found those treated with a lumpectomy and radiation were more likely to survive than those who had a mastectomy, regardless of their age or cancer type.

A lumpectomy is significantly less invasive than a mastectomy where the entire breast is removed.
