Texas State Representative Files Bill to Force Annual UT, A&M Game

Updated: January 29, 2013

Texas State Representative, and A&M grad, Ryan Guillen, has filed a bill for consideration that would require his alma mater and the University of Texas to play an annual, regular season football game.

Guillen, a Democrat who has held office since 2002, filed HB 778 on Monday and announced the legislation on Twitter.

The bill calls for an annual, nonconference, regular season game between the Aggies and Longhorns who, until A&M left the Big 12 conference for the SEC in 2012, had enjoyed a lengthy, historic rivalry.

Should the bill be passed as presented, if either of the schools refused to play each other then they would not be allowed to offer state-funded scholarships, grants or financial assistance to football players in the following academic year.

If passed, the bill would go into effect in the 2014-2015 season. To pass, the bill bust be approved by by two-thirds of the legislature.
