Carnival Cruise Ship Adrift off of Mexico after Fire in Engine Room

The Coast Guard says it is maintaining communication with a Carnival cruise ship that is adrift off of Mexico after a fire in an engine room.

The Coast Guard said in a news release that personnel aboard the Carnival Triumph extinguished the fire and no one was injured. The ship is now operating on emergency power about 150 miles off southern Mexico's Yucatan peninsula.

Tug boats have been dispatched to tow the ship to port in Progreso, Mexico, where it is expected to arrive on Wednesday afternoon, Carnival said in a statement on its Facebook page. The ship's 3,143 guests will then be flown from Progreso back to the U.S.

"Another Carnival ship, the Carnival Elation, is currently on scene and transferring additional food and beverage provisions to the Carnival Triumph," the statement said. There are 1,086 crew members on board the Triumph.
