(NECN)   Photos of the Woodstock, Vermont High School graduating class of 1926 do not include one student.

Theresa Mildred Gay is that missing student.

On Tuesday she got her high school diploma, 87 years late.

"What does this day mean? Everything in my life," Gay said.

Gay had to drop out to take care of her ailing mother, and said it just never quite worked out for her to return to classes.

The Windsor Central Supervisory Union heard Gay always wished she had been able to finish high school, so to recognize that respect for learning, the school district awarded the 103-year-old an honorary diploma.

"It doesn't matter how old you are or where you are, to recognize the value of education, and the appreciation of education, is fabulous to me," said Alice Worth, the superintendent of the Windsor Central Supervisory Union.
