Sequestration Would Affect Texoma

By: Larry Statser
Updated: February 25, 2013

The sequestration clock continues to tick, with the automatic cuts now just four days away. The cuts will hit a broad spectrum of federal programs and services that receive federal funds from head start to military bases.

One area that could impact millions of citizens is air travel. The Federal Aviation Administration  has a plan to cut $600 million for the remainder of the year. The cuts would begin in April and would include furloughs for 47,000 employees for one day per pay period. Cuts would close 100 air traffic control facilities and eliminate overnight shifts at 60 facilities.

Because of the large number of military flights, Wichita Falls' airport is not on the either list, but Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport is on the list of air traffic control towers that could be closed. Included on the list in which overnight shifts could be cut are the Oklahoma City, Lubbock and Abilene towers. Because of the cutbacks, travelers could experience delays up to 90 minutes during peak hours.
