Dog-Chaining Ordinance Back on the Table

Lobbying by a group against the city's current animal restraint ordinance results in the issue resurfacing and being placed back on the city council agenda. 

Tuesday, Lou Kreidler, Director of the Wichita County Health Department, will again ask councilors if they want to make changed to the city's current ordinance. She did so back in January, but after mixed reactions from councilors, no action was taken. 

She'll present two options to councilors. The first is to ban chaining. The second is to allow chaining, but only when the owner is within 50 feet of the animal. The city's current ordinance allows dogs to be chained up to 3 hours a day. It prohibits chaining between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. 

Health officials say the current law is un-enforceable. No action is expected tomorrow. If a new ordinance is adopted, it would likely be done at the March 19th city council meeting.
