Chaining your dog when you're not there to watch will soon become illegal in the city of Wichita Falls. City councilors unanimously passed the highly debated measure during this morning's council meeting. The ordinance will allow owners to only chain their dogs outdoors if they are standing outside within 50 feet of the animal.

And according to Lou Kreidler, Director of the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Health Department, standing in a doorway or looking out a window would not count as being within 50 feet of that animal. Before councilors voted on the ordinance, it drew lots of public comments both for and against it.

The ordinance also had members from pets low cost spay and neuter clinic explaining their commitment to raising funds and helping dog owners who keep their pets on a chain because they cannot afford a fence. Although the ordinance passed unanimously today it will take effect 180 days.
