Federal & Colorado Authorities Identify Suspected Gunman in Montague County Deputy Shooting

Federal and Colorado sources are saying 28 year old Evan Spencer Ebel is the man who shot and wounded Montague County Deputy James Boyd, and then led other law enforcement on a chase and drew them into a gun battle in Decatur.

Ebel is a parolee, and has ties to a white supremacist prison gang. Authorities believe he's
responsible for killing Tom Clements, who was the head of Colorado's Department of Corrections, and for the murder of 27 year old Nathan Leon, who was a pizza delivery driver.

New information is coming in as authorities try to unravel what led to the shooting and subsequent high speed chase, and federal agents are investigating a possible connection to two shootings in Colorado.

Texas investigators have confirmed items found in the suspect vehicle could be tied to another Colorado murder. They found a pizza box and Domino's delivery shirt in the back seat of the car, leading authorities to investigate the possibility that the same person may have been responsible for the recent murder of a pizza delivery man in the Denver area on top of the Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections.

Nathan Leon, 27, was shot several times on Sunday by a person or unknown group of people. He had gone missing while he was on duty delivering pizzas for Domino's Pizza and six hours later his body was found 20 miles away from his car. Police so far have no leads in the case.

Montague County Deputy James Boyd was shot in Bowie and now the suspect is reported to be on life support for possible organ harvesting after a shootout with authorities in Decatur. The FBI and Colorado authorities are investigating a possible connection to the shooting of the head of the Colorado Prison System.

Two crime scenes, more than 30 miles apart. The first crime scene is at U.S. 287 in the western side of Bowie. It started around 11 Thursday morning. Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham says Deputy James Boyd attempted to make a traffic stop on a black Cadillac. Officials say the driver began firing shots at Deputy Boyd, hitting him at least 3 times before speeding off.

About that time the call came out for help that the suspect vehicle was headed south on 287 and Decatur Police immediately went out to see if they could intercept the vehicle.

Deputy Boyd was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in Fort Worth while authorities from Montague County and state troopers chased the car at speeds topping more than 100 miles per hour.

30 miles south in Decatur, officials say the driver turned on Business 380 firing several rounds at Decatur Police including Chief Rex Hoskins.

"He was just swinging his left arm with his pistol just shooting at every police officer he could see," Hoskins said.

The suspect hit two police cars including the chief's.

Wise County Sheriff David Walker says the chase came to a grinding halt when the suspect ran a red light on Business 380 slamming into a semi rig, but officials say that collision still didn't stop the gunman.

The suspect got out of the car and engaged the deputies in a gun fight and the suspect was shot.

No other authorities were hit in the exchange of fire. After the suspect was down, he was flown to a Dallas area hospital.

At this time we do not know the condition of the deputy but Wise County officials said he was struck 3 times, twice in the chest, one bullet grazing his head. They say his bullet proof vest may have saved his life. The shooter did not have ID on him at the time of his shooting. Authorities say he is a white male in his 30's.

At a late afternoon news conference in Wise County, we learned the FBI is investigating whether the suspect is connected to the shooting death of the Director of the Colorado Department of Corrections, and investigators from Colorado are en route to Texoma.

The vehicle in Decatur did have Colorado plates and matches the description of the suspect vehicle in that shooting.
